The #100StarrDrops Event – A Display of the Butterfly Effect

Written By: Aden Yip and Ka Lap Ng

Since its global release on December 12, 2018, with ups and downs in player count, Brawl Stars have yet again reached the peak of its popularity in early 2024… But how was this possible? What happened that caused such a massive surge in players? We take a deep dive into this topic today only on Breakout International.

On December 12th 2018, the Finnish game company Supercell released their very own third-person hero shooter game, Brawl Stars. This was a big moment for Supercell, as they had not released a game globally for over 2 years. Since then, Brawl Stars has grown to support a player base of over 4 million players, keeping this number up by adding brand-new characters and unique events.

This brings us to one main event: the Omega Box milestone. The Omega Box event is one of the main events that has shaped Brawl Star’s newly founded success today. This event was one of the saddest and most influential updates towards the game. With it came the removal of the community’s beloved brawl boxes and the introduction of the Starr drops we know today. This, however, also came with a new way for players to enjoy the game: community events. This worldwide activity required people from all over the world to cooperate to unlock massive rewards ranging from double mastery events to the infamous 100 free Starr drops.

Boxes, as previously mentioned, were removed from Brawl Stars in December of 2022. They were an essential part of the game that provided players with fun and excitement, as they were loot boxes which could contain items for progression such as coins, or even unlocking new brawlers. The community loved the gambling factor in the game, which often led to excitement and crazy reactions. When they were removed from Brawl Stars, there was an overall negative response from the community. Over 109,000 people disliked the Brawl Stars – How to get the OMEGA BOX and #byebyeboxes video. Brawl Stars knew they had to do something big to replace the community’s most beloved factor of the game, so they introduced Starr drops. Starr drops are stars where you have the chance to upgrade them 4 times, in hopes of getting a higher tier Starr drop. The higher the tier, the better the reward. These tiers consist of Rare, Super Rare, Epic, Mythic, and Legendary. As much as players missed the boxes, these Starr drops provided almost the same effect of excitement as brawl boxes, and have led from joyful screams to broken phone screens due to the absurd rewards involved in them.

Then came March 22nd, when everyone in VSA united together. At precisely 2 o’clock, the infamous 100 starr drops were released in the shop. We, the writers, personally remember pulling out our phones during flex to open the rewards with our friends, and the disappointments and surprises during the unboxing spree. This event has brought the community together by unlocking Starr Drops for the event and playing together as a whole in general. The aftermath of the event was even better, with many YouTube uploads, and discussions on what we got from this legendary event.

In conclusion, we believe that the 100 Starr drops event has made a massive impact on Brawl Stars’ player activity and community as a whole. It has provided them with a big progression boost, and a fun event for the community to enjoy together.
