A Brief Review on Eggy Party: An Unexpected Success
Although the mobile game “Eggy Party” only recently launched on the 27th of May of 2022. it has rapidly climbed both local and international game charts on the app store. This game also has insanely high reviews on the app store at 4.7 out of 5 stars with 600 ratings (Apple). The majority of the written reviews had a five-star rating, complimenting the game’s concept, graphics, and character designs. Despite a couple of one to two-star reviews, comments and criticism weren’t provided. Hence, I assumed that the game was quite popular and enjoyed by the public
Having seen the game’s boom in popularity on mostly Chinese social media platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Douyin, it was rather nice seeing this game also rise in ranks internationally. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to try out the game myself and write a review.
First and foremost, I conducted some brief research about “Eggy Party” since I would like to know more about what I was getting into before trying the game out. Eggy Party (蛋仔派對) is a casual battle royale game developed by the company NetEase. It was a success, gaining over 30 million daily users in under a year (Wikipedia Contributors). The game allowed players to connect and interact with others online through multiplayer game modes such as parkour, hide and seek, and mafia.
The main premise of the game is parkour. It allows players to not only race in online obstacle courses on company-generated maps, but also maps created by its very own users, supporting user-generated content. While participating in the competition mode available for parkour, players can also increase their ranking among other users and level up their accounts, allowing for creative freedom, such as designing their profile and character appearances.
I found the integration of user-generated content similar to what Roblox has done to their interface, allowing users to create their maps and content for the other players to experience. I believe that this feature is very well thought out since users could spend time playing and creating new and challenging content, rather than repeating the developer’s maps and grinding progress.
The first thing I noticed after downloading the game was how adorable the eggs were! The stylised egg characters had a wide range. From the beginner’s choice of plain colours all the way to full-out costumes obtained by gacha, Eggy Party provided a colourful palette; never ceasing to disappoint the audience. The graphics of the game were also presented smoothly, from the introduction page to the main page to the map. Furthermore, the transitions were very smooth and cute! since every time I were to join a competition map, a small crane would lift my egg character, before switching to the loading screen as a transition.
While playing, I found the game experience similar to another very popular casual game, Fall Guys. I think it is safe to say that Eggy Party is essentially Fall Guys but with eggs instead. Both games’ main premise is competing with other users while racing on a parkour course. Since Fall Guys is not available on mobile devices, Eggy Party acts as a great replacement for people who want the same gameplay but on mobile instead.
My favourite part of this game was the fact that I could also play on some of the official parkour stages designed by the game offline. I discovered this unexpectedly when I was on a long lift ride where cellphone services weren’t great. On the left-hand side of the starting page, there is a button that says offline, and when you click on it, tons of different maps show up which allows you to race with bots without using any cellular data. I think that small details like this make games more accessible to people anytime, anywhere.
My favourite part of this game was that the developers had provided official parkour stages, specifically implemented for when your mobile service isn’t optimal. I discovered this unexpectedly when I was on a long lift ride, where the cellular data was sluggish. An option for playing offline is provided on the starting page (specifically left side), where you’d be playing and racing with bots within the map. I believe small, thoughtful ideas such as this is a great addition to the game, making it more accessible to people anytime, anywhere.
Overall, my experience with this game was fairly positive, as seen by its relaxing gameplay, interesting graphics, and unique maps. I would recommend this to students who want to invest some of their free time into a relaxing game that is not too mind-consuming and just want to sit down for 15 minutes or so to relax.
